Hau from the English Plaza Team

Every morning, I go to the Oregon Cafe to have a cup of coffee. I think the coffee is good, but more importantly, I like talking to the English Plaza interns.

On Wednesday mornings, Hau is behind the counter. He is always friendly and is happy to serve his customers. I ask him questions about his classes and work in the EP. Below is an example from our conversation.

George:  Good morning, Hau. Can I have some coffee, please?

Hau: Of course. Can I have your ID card, please?

George: Here you go. How is your morning so far?

Hau: Going well. I just finished my study abroad application.

George: When are you planning to study abroad?

Hau: Next spring. I want to go to Europe, but I don't know which country.

George: That's great Hau. I'm happy to hear that you will be studying abroad. What will you study?

Hau: I'm thinking about computer programming, but it's not decided. I just really want to go to Europe.

George: Well, that sounds like a good chance for you. Let me know how your application goes.

Hau: Will do.

George:  Have a nice day Hau.

Hau: You too.

    I think the coffee is good too because I can wake up when I drink it.
    I wanna go to Oregon Cafe to talk with international students.

    I think keep talking is not easy for everyone, but I think it's really important skill to be able to speak English frequently.

    I think it is good start to drink coffee at Oregon cafe. English plaza is good chance to practice English.

I can start a conversation, but how do I keep it going? This is what a student asked me recently. Once students get comfortable with meeting with other students, keeping the conversation alive can be a challenge. This can be easier if you are in a group of people where it only takes one person to ask a question or make a comment.  In many cases, someone is just waiting for anyone to say something. Holiday Season

The Holiday season (Thanksgiving and Christmas) is soon approaching. Tomorrow (11/28) is Thanksgiving in the United States. This is a time to spend with family and be thankful for all of the things we have in life. Christmas is a similar holiday spent with family celebrating the end of the year, and reflecting on the past year. In Japan, Christmas is a time to enjoy the bright lights (illumination) around the stations and in parks as well as eating cake and KFC. However, it can also be used to think about what we've done this year, and what we would like to do for the next.
